Online Business Failure

Would a reasonable person consider your Internet business a failure?


Are you spending more money on your business expenses than the amount of money your business is making you? Tired of making excuses and hiding credit card statements from your spouse? Have you actually started thinking you can’t succeed online? Are you real, real close to accepting defeat and slink away with your ‘tail tucked deeply between your legs’?

My fine friend, don’t do it! You will always feel guilty, and perhaps ashamed, if you quit now.

Assuming you haven’t wasted your online business time chasing after pipe dreams and searching for easy money, you may be one idea away from success. If you’ve worked consistently, while following basic selling strategies, you should become successful.

Of course you have to work long enough to build momentum for attention an traffic. Let’s assume you have done so. And, you’re still not making it. If this is the shape you’re in, we’re safe to figure you’re doing something wrong…

“The only reason you’re not making money online, is because you’re talking to the wrong people, about the wrong things, at the wrong time!”

This mistake is the end result of the group of people you choose to target with your Internet business.

You can pick your offer first, then work to attract prospects. Or, you can find a group of people who are already buying related products, or services. Then you get some of what they’re already buying, and slide your offers in front of their eyeballs.

It doesn’t take an Einstein to know it’s easier to sell people what they’re already buying. Or, that you’ll have competition for the money.

So what’s your answer? Everyone knows if you continue doing what you’ve been doing, your results will remain the same. Well, I don’t know it. And, I don’t accept this goofy definition of insanity.

There’s probably nothing wrong with your methods. You need to adjust where you’re aiming. You know, change your target and your ammunition to fit your new target. Because,

“The only reason you’re not making money online, is because you’re talking to the wrong people, about the wrong things, at the wrong time!”

I’ve been thinking about how many online marketing novices approach niche market research. For most newbies, finding a niche is similar to an inexperienced salespeople asking for the sale. The very thought of niche selection, and closing a sale, makes their insides turn into melted butter and squeezes icy cold perspiration from their pores. I understand those feelings of panic.

Been there and don’t want to go back…

Thinking niche research is difficult, or esoteric, will give you a mental block. You don’t need that kind of emotional baggage. Stop thinking of market research as a 1,000 pound gorilla. Niche research is merely ‘market research’. And the process is much like finding the best buy for a new digital camera.

You know how to do that, don’t you?

If nothing else, our consumer society has taught us comparison shopping skills. Market research could be thought of as another way of saying comparison shopping. Therefore, comparison shopping, and market research, can be defined as a set of strategies we use in the process of discovery.

Discovering a profitable target market of Internet buyers, is a fairly simple process. Plus, it’s a process anyone can master. You don’t have to get lucky. But, if you work the process long enough, luck will ‘find’ you in the form of a hot, runaway niche.

Funny notion: the more you work, the luckier you get…

You already know most Internet ‘experts’ advocate you pick the late Gary Halbert’s ‘hungry crowd’ concept when choosing your online niche market, right? I concur with Gary’s view.

But there’s hungry crowds and there’s hungry crowds. When you’ve had the direct selling successes Halbert did, you’d likely envision the hungry crowd at a New York Yankees championship playoff baseball game.

Uh, that’s my vision too. But, I’m still looking for that one…

Because building keyword targeted websites is relatively inexpensive, you can make a good piece of coin catering to a hungry crowd found at middle school baseball games. Admittedly, to make a living from it, you’d have to build more than one or two of these kind of themed web sites.

Which is a good business plan while you continue to search for your ‘hot, runway niche’.

Niche Research Ideas

Niche research doesn’t need be complicated. When you have a plan, or a step-by-step guide, finding a target market is a simple process. After all, a niche market is just  a group of people who are buyers of related products & services. For a marketer, a target market is a dissimilar group of people who regularly buy identical products or services. Period.

Nothing exotic about it…

You want to find a bunch of people who’re already buying related stuff online. Got this picture? Good. So what do people buy? This innocent question stumps many of us Newbies because we pride ourselves of not being noisy.

We have to get over this illusion. We are noisy and we’re now professional Internet Marketers. Being professional, we now have the sacred duty to spy, sleuth and detect.

For now, let’s accept you don’t know what other people buy. On the other hand, you do know what you buy, don’t you? So what are some products and services you’ve bought? What things do you have on your ‘wish list’? Pick something you’ve bought, going to buy, or someday hope to buy.

Doesn’t matter. Pick something…

Let me give you an example. I just looked up from my computer and saw an address book listing Internet marketers contacts. An address book? Sure. Why not? 

Address book. Contact journal. Address journal and contact book. These are legitimate niche ideas. The thing is, we won’t know if you can make money with them until we research their profit potential.

But, and that’s a big BUT, this is how simple the niche market process is. You start with an idea. Don’t discount any idea until you’ve made a basic search

for it. And, don’t fall into the shopworn concept that you have to stick to subjects and niches you’re passionate about. It’d be nice to have your cake and eat it too. But, don’t let the ‘passion’ argument keep you from making money online.

Back to our simple idea, address book. Any chance of a profit there? Let’s plug & play. In Google’s External Keyword Adsense Tool, we’ll enter: address book; address journal; contact book and contact journal.

To my surprise, the local monthly search results show 33 different related keywords searches from 1,600 searches up to 673,000 searches. Plus, it’s showing advertisers buying Adword clicks for $2.27 per click, to 43 cents for the keyword phrase with 880 searches per month.

This is for ‘broad’ match…

For ‘exact’ match: the Adword click costs drop down to $1.67 for the keyword phrase with 60,500 monthly searches. And, advertisers are paying 11 cents for the keyword phrase with 170 monthly searches. Searches for related keywords are: the afore mentioned 60,500 monthly searches, and ends at a measly 36 searches before running out of available data.

The important thing is: there are only 28 keyword phrases separating the 60,500 searched phrase to the 36 monthly searched phrase. And only five searched phrases above 1,000 monthly searches. Sounds like too much work for me.

Next idea, please…

But, this is exactly how very simple the niche research process is. When you’re new, you’re going to get more misses than you will hits. Which is part of the whole life, the universe, and everything, sort of thing.
